This week’s crazy building is the Asahi Beer Hall in Toyko, Japan. As you may have guessed, it’s the main office of Asahi Breweries.
The brainchild of French designer Philippe Starcke, Asahi Beer Hall was completed in 1989 and includes two highly unusual structures.
The main building is over 300 feet tall and 22 stories. This skyscraper’s golden beer-colored cladding causes it to resemble a beer mug, while the white, irregular rooftop was designed to represent the froth.
The other structure is a massive, golden flame-shaped structure known as the Asahi Flame. Weighing nearly 400 tons, the flame represents Asahi beer’s “burning heart”. It’s illuminated at night so that it appears to burn 24 hours a day.
It leads one to wonder if their beer is as refreshing as their architectural tastes.
