This week’s crazy building is the Metrosol Parasol in Sevilla, Spain.
The nickname for this remarkable structure is “Las Setas” (Spanish for “The Mushrooms”).
Originally, the city of Sevilla was planning an underground parking garage on the site, but instead found underground ruins of an ancient part of the town. Instead, a museum and a series of shops was built underground, and this architectural marvel was constructed above.
Though the locals were initially skeptical, many have now warmed up to the undulating lattice that rises high above the heads of passersby. It’s a testament to the flexibility and ingenuity of both the designers and the city as a whole.
