You may already know this building, The Broad is a new contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles. It was founded philanthropists Eli and Edyth Broad and built in 2015. Some of their goals are to enrich, educate, inspire, and foster appreciation of today’s art. One way they do that is by offering free admission.
The Veil and The Vault
The design concept is called “the Veil and the Vault,” and is design studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s vision to unite both its storage aspect with its public galleries. The 120,000 square foot building houses 2,000 pieces of artwork from the 1950’s to today. Visitors are actually ushered through the vault to get into the museum, gaining a glimpse of the artwork there.

The most noteworthy part of the building, the “veil,” is the white exoskeleton on the exterior of the building. Its design allows diffused sunlight to enter the galleries. The impressive 24 foot high ceilings also help to showcase the work on display.
In conclusion, The Broad has set forth an admirable goal of fostering an appreciation for the art of today, if the work on display is as interesting as the building, I’m sure they will gain a following and see that goal realized!
