North Park

North Park gets its name from its position to the northeast of Balboa Park. This sprawling neighborhood started out around 1900 as a lemon grove, and it retains the same warm, inviting ambiance it had in its early days. The area is mostly flat to the north, with canyons spreading through its southern reaches.

What’s Cool About North Park, San Diego

North Park community sign30th and University is the lively center of this area, featuring an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. The wonderful North Park Community Park and Recreation Facility provides a playground, basketball, handball, and tennis courts, and other amenities. The newly renovated Birch North Park Theatre hosts the Lyric Opera and several plays each year. The Ray at Night Art Walk happens monthly at the neighborhood’s center, and North Park Holiday Parade is held every December. Balboa Park’s countless museums and attractions lie just southwest of the area. North Park is a highly diverse community that has a high proportion of children. The 8 Freeway to the north and the 805 at the neighborhood’s eastern edge provide quick transportation around San Diego. The tasteful homes display a wide range of architectural styles, and many small but affordable apartments are also available.
