Bird Rock
Bird Rock in southwest La Jolla is more than just a remarkable community, it’s a state of mind. This upscale coastal neighborhood has a way of separating itself from La Jolla and Pacific Beach—whether you’re visiting the beach or taking a stroll among the Merchant District’s dozens of businesses, shops, and restaurants. The area is known for its beautiful cliffside ocean views, its miniature roundabouts, and its namesake: a small stone island just offshore, covered in seagulls and pelicans.

What’s Cool About Bird Rock
There are three parks in the area: the grassy seaside Calumet Park, Bird Rock Park which offers a playground and sports field, and the tiny but scenic La Jolla Hermosa Park. While most of the coastline is rocky, Tourmaline Beach at Bird Rock’s south border is ideal for surfing, and the local tide pools are full of hermit crabs, fish and sea urchins. There’s plenty of great cuisine to be found here: short ribs at Beaumont’s, homemade pasta at Lupi, or a steaming cup of java at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. The active nightlife of Pacific Beach also lies just to the south.
Homes in Bird Rock, while still pricey, tend to be more affordable than those in the rest of La Jolla, and many offer breathtaking views of the sea. Overall, this neighborhood strikes a satisfying balance between lively commerce and coastal charm. By Gary Kent
