UCSD’s Fallen Star is reminiscent of a scene from The Wizard of Oz.
Designed by artist Do Ho Suh, the work examines the concepts of home, space, and memory. Suh felt like he had been “dropped from the sky” when he first came to study in America.
The Fallen Star sits at a 10-degree angle while the floor is at a 5-degree angle. Inside, with the exception of the chandelier, there are no straight lines. Cozy furnishings like a fireplace, sofa, and family photos fill the small 15×18 foot space.
The 70,000-pound house is earthquake-proof, can withstand 100 mph winds, and has an 18-inch thick foundation. One of the largest cranes in America was needed to position it.
It’s open for visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 2pm, no reservation required.
